At Curtain Upp® we follow the NATD (National Association of Teachers of Dancing) syllabi for Ballet, National Tap and Modern Stage. Dancers also have the opportunity to take part in variety of other exams including the NATD Rainbow Award.
We believe exam work not only enhances knowledge and the development of strong technique, but also provides artistry and quality of movement. It increases focus and attention in class and gives each student a goal to work towards. Training for exams promotes respect and encouragement between fellow dancers and can improve self-esteem on completion of achievements.
You don’t need to do anything to get involved, simply join a regular weekly class at Curtain Upp. All students in syllabus classes will enjoy the opportunity to take dance exams. They are not compulsory, but they are available to everyone. If you have any questions about participating in the exams, simply have a chat with Miss Helen, call or email.
The NATD provides a clearly defined examination structure which caters for all types of learners, whether they wish to progress to making dance their profession (like Miss Helen), or pursue dance purely as a form of movement and exercise. Examinations take place yearly and are optional.

About the N.A.T.D.
National Association of Teachers of Dance
The NATD was the first awarding organisation to offer a graded syllabus. The NATD syllabus relates to the work of three pioneering choreographers of our time, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Jose Limon. It employs contact work between dancers, release technique, fall and recovery, floorwork and improvisation, creative freedom and provides an excellent basic knowledge for pupils, that can take them confidently as dancers to a degree level standard, or support their understanding of choreography required in todays dance work place. NATD syllabi are available for Grades 1 to 6, Intermediate Foundation/Intermediate and Associate with an accompanying DVD pack.
